All work must be original, unpublished, and written in English or Scots. The use of AI is strictly prohibited, and we reserve the right to remove AI-generated or AI-inflected work without compensation.
Should you choose to republish elsewhere, we kindly ask that you acknowledge us as the original publisher. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please withdraw your submission if your work is accepted elsewhere.
We aim to ensure a careful and timely review of all submissions, with response times currently averaging as little as four weeks. There is no word limit, but typically we favour stories that run between 2,000 and 5,000 words in length.
Please submit your work as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) document, double-spaced, using 12-point font.
Please include a brief author’s biography (up to 100 words).
This is the Submission Portal.
A full fee waiver is in place for students currently enrolled at any Scottish university (please contact the General Editor directly from a University email account).
All published works will automatically qualify for the Ninewells Literary Prize, which honours the best story to appear in the journal within any given calendar year. Subject to external funding success, this will come with a cash award.
